Richmond Take Full Points from Surrey Sports Park Double Header

SEMLA Division 3 | Surrey Sports Park

Richmond picked up a hard-fought win and a commanding shutout in a SEMLA Division 3 double header away at Surrey Sports Park, edging past Spencer 4s before dismantling Guildford.

Richmond vs Spencer 4s

Result: Richmond 4 – 2 Spencer 4s

Richmond welcomed two debutants to the match squad this week, left-handed attacker Rob Dinsmore and Flynn Taylor, who bolstered the defensive unit for the day.

The match began in tense fashion, with both sides enjoying spells of possession but struggling to find a way through organised defences. The deadlock was eventually broken in style - and surprise - as Richmond executed a hidden ball play between James “Moose” Morrison and Alan Keeley. While not flawless, it did just enough to deceive the Spencer goalkeeper, whose attention was fixed on Moose. Alan kept his composure to slot home and make it 1–0.

Spencer responded with a sustained spell of pressure, but Richmond’s midfield stood firm and forced a crucial turnover. Conor Hafner moved the ball quickly to Rich Laperle in attack, who drew the slide before slipping a neat feed to Dinsmore. The debutant made no mistake, calmly finishing high to double Richmond’s lead.

Spencer pulled one back to make it 2–1, but Richmond restored their advantage through another moment of individual quality from Alan Keeley, who beat his man with a brilliant swim dodge before finishing clinically.

The game remained finely poised. Spencer again reduced the deficit to 3–2, and with chances at both ends, tension grew as the final minutes approached. Richmond’s defence did well to hold Spencer dodgers wide, while Spencer's goalkeeper kept them in the contest with several strong saves.

With just over a minute remaining, the ball moved end to end, and goalkeeper Barry Macleod-Cullinane produced a vital intervention with some neat footwork to keep Richmond ahead. A late Richmond turnover allowed a timeout to be called with 20 seconds on the clock.

Under heavy pressure, Tim Sugrue carried the ball calmly behind the goal despite being double-teamed, before feeding Moose. Spotting Rich Laperle cutting hard to the crease, Moose zipped a low pass across goal, and Laperle finished neatly to seal a 4–2 win.

Special mention goes to Conor Hafner, whose box-to-box performance and dominance on face-offs proved crucial, and to Rich Laperle, who covered ground relentlessly and moved with true Canadian energy throughout.

Richmond vs Guildford

Result: Richmond 13 – 0 Guildford

Richmond’s second outing of the day was nothing short of a masterclass, combining clinical finishing, rock solid defence, and relentless midfield pressure to record a comprehensive 13–0 shutout.

Guildford faced a tough challenge, short on numbers and fielding several developing players. Full credit to them for their effort throughout, and to Owen Keeley, who stepped into goal for them and faced a constant barrage.

Richmond were ruthless from the outset. James “Moose” Morrison led the scoring with four goals, linking superbly with Rob Dinsmore, the pair reunited after two decades and playing as though they’d never been apart. Dinsmore added two goals of his own, showing his left-handed class.

Alan Keeley remained direct and positive in attack, Rich Laperle contributed two tidy finishes from smart movement, and Sergiu Teslovan unleashed a pair of powerful outside shots.

Trevor Bobowick added a well-taken goal, while Conor Hafner capped a dominant midfield display by scoring straight off a face-off win.

Defensively, Stephen Brown, Matt Blom and Flynn Taylor kept Guildford’s dodgers well away from dangerous areas, while Macleod-Cullinane was calm and assured when called upon to secure the clean sheet.

By the final whistle, Richmond had delivered a complete performance - aggressive, disciplined, and full of confidence.
