SEMLA Division 3 | Canterbury City | 31 January

Richmond travelled to Canterbury City with a 10-man squad for a South East Division Three fixture and produced a disciplined, hard-earned performance to claim a crucial away win - a result that secures second place in the local league.
The game began in tense fashion, with a physical edge setting the tone early on. Richmond responded intelligently, remaining patient, conserving energy, and valuing possession on what can only be described as the biggest pitch ever played on - genuinely vast.
Defensively, Richmond were excellent throughout. With just two poles available, Alan Keeley and Stephen Brown put in huge shifts, communicating well and sliding effectively to limit Canterbury largely to outside shots. Their organisation and composure were central to keeping pressure off the goal.
The midfield unit delivered a monumental collective effort. Tim Sugrue and Conor Hafner covered enormous ground box-to-box, while special credit must go to Chris King and Noah Hunter, who produced tireless performances despite coming straight off the back of a mammoth bike challenge over the previous 24 hours. Their engine, work rate, and composure were vital on such a demanding surface.
After a patient opening spell, Richmond’s attack eventually found its stride. James Morrison, Owen Keeley, and Rich Laperle linked up well, moving the ball crisply and creating space through intelligent off-ball movement. The goals came from a strong spread of contributors, underlining the team’s cohesion and unselfish play.
The match was well officiated throughout, and full credit goes to Canterbury City, who battled hard and deserved praise for their effort. It was also great to see new players coming into the game and competing with confidence.
A composed and gritty performance from Richmond, built on discipline, patience, and collective effort which confirms second place in the league, missing out on promotion only because of our head to head record, a one goal defeat, to Camden.
Man of the Match honours go jointly to Chris King and Noah Hunter for exceptional midfield performances, made all the more impressive by their efforts following a mammoth bike challenge in the 24 hours leading into the game.
